So, what does a person at the Pre-Intermediate / Intermediate level look like?
Let’s start with the Pre-Intermediate.
The first level of the two groups, “Pre-intermediate / Intermediate is Pre-Intermediate, or Level B1, corresponds to independent language users, i.e., those with the necessary fluency to communicate without effort with native speakers.
Level B1 Skills
When you read this information, one of the questions you might ask yourself is, what language competencies characterise a person who can prove they have a level B1 in English? The CEFRL specifies the following:
- Can understand the main points of clear texts in standard language if they are about topics they are familiar with, whether in work, study or leisure contexts.
- He or she can cope with most situations that might arise on a trip to areas where people speak this language.
- They can produce simple, orderly texts about topics they are familiar with or are interested in.
- Describe experiences, events, wishes, hopes and dreams and briefly justify opinions or explain plans.
Now, with the Intermediate.
Level B2 corresponds to people who are independent users of the language, such as those with the necessary fluency to communicate without effort with native speakers. It is essential to remember that the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) is the system that defines and explains the different levels of oral and written expression and comprehension for languages such as English.
Level B2 Skills
- Can understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their career or field of vocation.
- They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, making regular interaction with native speakers possible without straining either party.
- He or she also can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving various options’ advantages and disadvantages.
